What Makes Us Different

Real Relationships, Not Just Lessons

Many of our students have been learning with us for years. Some first met Debora in Perth and Sydney over a decade ago and still join lessons every week today. We believe language learning thrives when trust, consistency and genuine human connection come first.

Personalised Learning With Heart

Every student has different goals, interests and challenges. We take the time to understand who you are and create lessons that feel engaging, supportive and tailored to your journey.

Confidence Before Perfection

Learning Italian is not about memorising grammar rules. It is about gaining the confidence to communicate, express yourself and enjoy the language without fear of making mistakes.

more than a language, a connection to Italy

    About me

    Debora Menna - Founder

My name is Debora, and I was born and raised in the heart of Italy.

Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by the power of language. While others saw Italian simply as a school subject, I saw something more: a world of stories, emotions, connections, and possibilities. I was captivated by the beauty of words, the rhythm of sentences, and the unique way language allows us to understand one another.

Italian language and literature quickly became my greatest passions. I was equally fascinated by the elegance of clear communication and by the richness of a language capable of expressing both the simplest thoughts and the deepest emotions.

After graduating in Social Sciences in 2006, I embarked on a journey that would unexpectedly shape the course of my life.

    I moved to Australia.

What I thought would be an adventure became a calling.

In Perth, I began teaching Italian in primary schools, colleges, and adult education programmes. For the first time, I witnessed something truly special: people discovering not only a new language, but a new way of seeing the world. Through Italian, they found confidence, curiosity, friendships, memories, and sometimes even a deeper connection with themselves.

My journey later continued in Sydney's North Shore, where I spent many wonderful years teaching students from all walks of life. Some wanted to reconnect with their Italian heritage, others dreamed of travelling through Italy with confidence, and many simply fell in love with the language and everything it represents.

Those years taught me something important.

Learning a language is never just about words.

    It is about people.

    It is about stories.

    It is about belonging.

Perhaps the greatest privilege of my career has been the relationships that grew from those lessons. Many of the students I first met in Australia continue to learn with me today. Years have passed, life has changed, technology has transformed the way we meet, yet every week we still sit together, talk, laugh, learn, and share a small piece of our lives through the Italian language.

To me, there is no greater compliment.

Those enduring connections are the foundation upon which I later created La Dolce Lingua Italiana.

Today, after more than fifteen years of teaching experience, I continue to welcome students from around the world into a learning environment built on trust, encouragement, curiosity, and genuine human connection.

I believe people learn best when they feel comfortable enough to take risks, make mistakes, and express themselves freely. For this reason, my lessons are never about perfection. They are about progress. They are about discovering that speaking Italian can feel natural, enjoyable, and deeply rewarding.

One student who left a lasting impression on me was Val. At seventy-five years old, she decided to begin learning Italian from scratch. Her enthusiasm, determination, and courage reminded me of a lesson I have witnessed countless times throughout my career: it is never too late to begin something beautiful.

After just over a year of regular lessons, we were having meaningful conversations entirely in Italian. Watching students reach milestones they once thought impossible remains one of the greatest joys of my work.

Today, my passion for teaching is stronger than ever.

Every student who joins La Dolce Lingua Italiana begins a unique journey. Some paths are straightforward, others take unexpected turns, but each step brings new confidence, new discoveries, and a deeper connection to the Italian language and culture.

As I often tell my students, learning Italian is not a race.

    It is a journey.

And the most memorable journeys are not the ones completed the fastest, but the ones that leave something behind long after they are over.

I would be delighted to accompany you along the way.

I look forward to meeting you.
